DRIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA

Vehicles drive on the left hand side of the road and the speed limit on highways is maximum 120 km per hour, usually 60 or 80 km per hour in the suburbs. Look out for the speed limit road signs. The Metro Police as well as speed cameras are plentiful. Hefty fines are imposed for not wearing a seatbelt and for talking on a mobile phone while your vehicle is switched on. Hands free car kits are available at all cellular retail stores.

It is important to note that the public transport system in South Africa not yet reliable or well developed. At the moment, buses are infrequent and taxis are not safe to use. In order to live and travel safely and efficiently in South Africa having ones own car is very important.
